Where's Your Sustenance?
What truly sustains us when everything else fades away? That is the piercing question at the heart of this message drawn from Amos chapter 8, verses 11 through 14. The prophet Amos delivers a sobering word to the northern kingdom of Israel, a people enjoying material prosperity yet drifting dangerously far from God. The warning is striking: a famine is coming, not of bread or water, but of hearing the very words of the Lord. As we sit with that image, we are invited to ask ourselves honestly whether we are feeding our spirits with the same urgency and appetite we bring to feeding our bodies. The parallel between ancient Israel and our present moment is impossible to ignore. We live in a time of abundant information yet growing spiritual hunger, where truth is increasingly watered down, compromised, and reshaped for convenience. The message calls us to recognize that settling for a diluted or imitation faith leaves us just as empty as the Israelites who had everything materially yet had nothing spiritually. The Word of God is described here not as a passive text but as something alive and active, a daily source of nourishment that sustains us through every trial, every dry season, and every moment of uncertainty. If we have been treating our faith as a once-a-week meal rather than a daily feast, this message is a gracious and urgent wake-up call.
