Keeper of the Oil
In 1 Chronicles 27:28, we encounter a seemingly insignificant figure named Joash, whose entire biblical legacy consists of just eight words: keeper of the stores of oil for King David. Yet this obscure servant in a dark cellar teaches us profound truths about faithful service in God's kingdom. Joash represents the countless believers who serve behind the scenes—those who prepare media presentations, fold modesty cloths, bag cookies for outreach, or spend hours in intercessory prayer that no one witnesses. His name means 'God has given,' reminding us that the Holy Spirit's anointing has been deposited in our lives, and we are called to guard, protect, and maintain that sacred oil. The message challenges our generation's tendency to process everything intellectually—demanding to see the topic, examine it, and reach immediate conclusions—when God often plants seeds in our hearts that need time to germinate in darkness before they can grow. Like the ant that breaks seeds to prevent premature sprouting, we must learn that some divine promises require patient waiting rather than forced intellectual resolution. Are we willing to serve faithfully in the cellar, unnoticed and unappreciated, trusting that the King knows every sparrow that falls and every hour we spend tending His anointing?
