The Road is Red

Mar 22, 2026    Pastor Tim Scarbrough

This powerful message confronts us with a profound truth about value and redemption through the story of a mother searching for her son's lost hearing aids. While the boy saw only hearing aids, the mother saw $6,500 worth of sacrifice and love. This perfectly illustrates how God views the lost—not as disposable or worthless, but as infinitely valuable because of the price He paid. The sermon centers on Luke 19 and the account of Zacchaeus, a wealthy tax collector whom society had written off as a sinner. Yet Jesus saw him differently, declaring that He came to seek and save that which was lost. We're challenged to examine three stages of lostness: being lost without knowing it, being lost but too prideful to admit it, and finally acknowledging our lostness and seeking help. The red road referenced throughout represents the blood of Christ shed from Pilate's court to Calvary—seven distinct bloodsheds that marked the path of our redemption. From the Garden of Eden when God first clothed Adam and Eve with animal skins, requiring the death of an innocent creature, to David sacrificing bulls every six paces while bringing the ark to Jerusalem, blood has always been central to atonement. This isn't about gore for shock value—it's about understanding the immense cost of our salvation. The message concludes with a sobering personal story about a homeless veteran in a subway whose overwhelming odor caused two and a half million men to part around him, yet no one reached out. It reminds us that we all once stank in our sin, yet Jesus valued us enough to lay down His life. The question we must answer is simple: where are we in our journey, and will today be the day we respond to the call of salvation?
