Sanctification

What does it really mean to be sanctified? This message tackles a fascinating tension in Scripture: we are told we have been sanctified, yet we're also called to pursue holiness as an ongoing process. Drawing from 1 Corinthians 6:11, we see that believers were washed, sanctified, and justified in Christ - past tense, done deal. Yet 2 Peter 3:18 urges us to grow in grace and knowledge, and Hebrews 10:14 reveals that Christ has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. The key insight is that sanctification operates on multiple levels. There's a positional sanctification - the moment we're set apart for God's purposes, receiving our title as holy ones. Then there's progressive sanctification - the lifelong work of the Holy Spirit transforming us to become more like Christ. The rocket surgeon illustration brilliantly captures this: receiving the title on day one doesn't make you skilled, but it gives you the position and the opportunity to grow into excellence. Similarly, we come as we are, but we don't stay as we are. The Holy Spirit works in us both to will and to do His good pleasure. This understanding frees us from two dangerous extremes: thinking we're already perfect and can coast, or believing we must earn our holiness through endless striving. Instead, we rest in our secure position while actively cooperating with God's transforming work until we reach our ultimate sanctification in glory.
