Walking Into Danger

Feb 15, 2026    Pastor Tim Scarbrough

This powerful message confronts us with a challenging question: are we walking into spiritual danger by accumulating possessions while neglecting God's kingdom purposes? Through the parable of the rich farmer in Luke 12, we encounter a sobering reality—a man whose land produced abundantly, yet his response was to build bigger barns and hoard his wealth for a comfortable retirement. God called him a fool, not because he was successful, but because he was 'not rich toward God.' The message cuts through our American dream mentality, reminding us that everything we have—our homes, cars, bank accounts, even our ability to earn—belongs to God. We're merely stewards for a vapor in time. The rich young ruler walked away sad because his identity was wrapped up in his possessions. Are we making the same mistake? The Israelites entering the Promised Land received cities they didn't build, wells they didn't dig, and vineyards they didn't plant—all gifts from God. Yet how quickly we forget the source of our blessings once we become comfortable. This isn't a call to poverty, but to perspective. It's about loosening our grip on what we think is ours and recognizing that when we give generously, we're simply returning to God what was already His. The challenge before us is clear: will we continue stockpiling for ourselves, or will we invest in eternal treasures that matter?
